I have to admit I am a bit of a sudoku addict. I am a numbers guy so it seems right that I should like sudoku. It happens that
Dear Abby is next to the sudoku puzzle in my paper, so out of strictly

purient interest I sometimes find myself reading Ms Phillips column. It caught my attention today, because a young wife was writing Abby to say that her husband had been sick and had an uncontrollable cough. Not that she was writing out of concern for her husband's health, but rather she thought it was inconsiderate on his part that since he was sick he should go sleep in the other room. It seems HIS cough was keeping HER up at night. I guess she missed the part in the wedding vows about "for better or worse".

Didn't there use to be a time in America when we were at least a little bit concerned about the welfare of others? As I thought about this it occurred to me that this symptom of "it's all about me" really is rampant in our society. We have a young woman in California who thinks it is ok to have the taxpayers pay for her to have
8 more children, in addition to the six she already has, because she just loves children. If you ask me, she loves
media attention way more than she loves children.
We have executives at major corporations who think it is ok for them to take millions of dollars in bonuses when their actions drove their company into
bankruptcy. Even when our politicians try to structure an economic stimulus package to benefit unemployed folks, they have to get their
cut of the pie for pet projects. I think a politician's pet projects are really more about the politician himself getting re-elected through whatever means it requires.

I love the movie "
Remember the Titans". Denzel Washington is the black coach who has to bring together the first racially integrated football team in Alexandria, Virginia. There is a line in the movie where the stud linebacker is being chastised for not being a "team player". His response is "TEAM? You want me to wear myself out for the team? Man there ain't no team, so I am gonna GET ME MINE."
I am certainly not perfect and I frequently give to get. I am however convicted today that I need to do something out of concern for someone else's welfare and not because I expect to get anything in return. In "Remember the Titan's" they do eventually figure out how to be a team and they end up with a perfect season, winning every game and the state championship.
I love happy endings so today let's all pay something forward.
(ok enough with the movie references)
