Come on guys you are better than this

I am talking to you Google.  If you opened up Google today, you may have noticed that your background changed.  It is a new feature with the Google page.  A couple of weeks ago Google introduced the option for you to have a different background when you open the standard Google.com.  I don't know maybe there were not enough people who tried it out and they wanted more folks to see the lovely pictures they offer you as an option.

Personally I know I never did anything with it, quite frankly because I think the whole concept sucks.  If you have read my blog much you know that I am a big fan of Google and think they have done a whole lot of things like email, docs and browsers right, but count me as definitely not on board with this one.  One of the appeals of the Google page is the absolute lack of clutter.  It comes up with exactly what you want (a search bar) with no distractions.  If you want distractions use iGoogle or Yahoo.  A picture of a sand dune is a distraction to me.   The point here is I don't want or need that.

The good news is this supposed to be a 24 hour experiment, to gauge people's response.  Here's my response it sucks!  I am no spring chicken, but I do still have pretty good eyesight and anything but the default image of a sand dune makes the words blurry.  At least they are blurry to my old eyes.  What's with the sand dune anyway?  What kind of felling am I supposed to get looking at a sand dune?  Why do I care, I just want to search for an optometrist and this picture thing is distracting--it sucks!

Fine, you want to play around for a day, that's ok.  But I better get up tomorrow and find my old clean Google page, because I'll switch to Bing if I want a picture behind my search engine.

  1. I barely have time to publish the post and the image has changed to some kind of psycho Christmas balls.

  2. If your Google background is white, and directly below the Google search box says:"Curious about today's homepage? Add your own background image now> you can click it. It will take you to a page where you are asked to sign in with your Google Account, then you get a whole new set of categorized background pics to choose from, including the large balls in a pond.

  3. I completely agree with your take on the 'background pollution' of the Google search page. This was a totally noxious change! It seems they have changed it back. One can only imagine that they appointed a new Senior Vice President for Brand Destruction......they sure made a good start of it today!
