Our Social Networking Prez

President Obama conducted an online townhall Q&A meeting today that was broadcast on Facebook and on the Whitehouse website. You could also follow along on Twitter to see comments by searching for #WHHCQ. First off I was pretty impressed that the President has truly embraced the internet and social networks as a way of connecting. I mean he is the President of the United States so it makes him seem more real and like a friend when you follow him on Facebook.

Ok I know he has some well paid staff that actually update his information and he is not really sitting on his Blackberry Tweeting during cabinet meetings. Although it would be pretty funny to be on Twitter and see "@joeyB did you just see Hillary give Geitner that go to hell look?" "@Ramobamo tell @FormerAggie to say he has a plan to take out Ahmadinejad"

After actually watching the Q&A, I am not so excited anymore.

A) The video and audio sucked. Everything kept jumping and stopping. I know it was not just me, because there were any number of comments from other users about the quality of the feed. I guess with all the bailout money being spent we had to cheap out on the web cam setup.

B) The whole thing seemed very scripted. He only took one question from a Facebook users. Every other question from the live audience or pre-tapped video feed looked to be a total lay-up shot for him.

C) I know he is a smart man, but in addition to point B, he never stopped to think about his answer. It's like he already knew the answer before the question was asked!

Maybe I am too harsh, he is at least trying to use technology to connect with people, but now I have to wonder if I really want to be all that familiar with my President. Maybe I was better off not knowing him so well.

To quote another great and powerful leader "just ignore that man behind the curtain".

  1. Great post, I seemed to miss this (or perhaps I missed it on purpose, whatever)...

I recall just before Election Day Obama had amassed a huge collection of followers and actually followed people back on Twitter and it was such a big deal - especially for the apathetic 18 - 35 set, as his campaign staff KNEW that if they were going to get to us (and they needed us to win), they were going to have to come to us. And where can you find us? Well on the Internets of course.

Election Day came and what happened to Obama's Twitter? He ditched it. Or rather, his staffers ditched it. It is a sad reflection of this country that I'm sure many believed he WAS actually BlackBerrying updates - OMG he's talking to *us!* and really CARES WOW!!

Personally, I want to see more than some chintzy PR stunt via streaming video.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

    With me?

If the administration had less "busy work" perhaps they could formulate a viable internet strategy. But seeing as how they might be a tad busy these days..... I guess this is the best we get.

    Oh well.
